Our food supply is more delicate than most people realize.
We’re becoming more disconnected with nature every second.
Life is too fast.
We’re all on the verge of insanity.
We can change. We can slow down. We can grow things and teach our kids to connect to the natural world.
I’d like to say that we have a big farm that we’re refurbishing on a winding stream with miles of vegetables growing – and that’s what I do for a living.
No.
I have a consuming job and two energetic humans to raise, and that doesn’t leave a lot of time in the garden. I am always late getting things planted and by late summer, our garden looks like a jungle. We keep doing it, though, because once you’ve had a garden, you will always have to have a garden. It also produces asparagus that makes my favorite soup, and strawberries for the kids to pick in June, and a steady stream of veggies throughout the summer and fall.
This blog started 13 years ago when I first started really gardening and we were vegetarian. My life has evolved. I stopped writing when I lost my most fervent reader, my mother. We moved. We had another child. I went back to school. I’ve changed jobs more than once. Instagram kindof killed the concept of blogging, though it seems to be coming back around? I even accidentally let my URL (1veggieatatime.com) go.
Yet here the posts still are, like flashes from my past. I’ve missed this place. I’m asked most by people in my life about growing stuff: How to start, what to plant, and what not to put in a compost bin. I’m happy to share what I’ve learned. Good luck with your own little backyard farm.
